The National Education Policy, 2020 (NEP 2020), was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 15 August, and it introduces a number of changes to the country's educational system. One of the most significant changes is the introduction of the Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam - a national education board - to ensure that all schools across India meet the same high standards.

Nepal has been implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 with a view to achieving universal education. The policy envisages that all children, irrespective of caste, gender, or social status, will be able to complete a basic education by the year 2035. To achieve this goal, the government has launched the Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam (ABSS).


The ABSS is a national platform that will help to improve teacher quality and to incentivize better teaching practices. It will also promote community-based learning networks and provide support for low-income families.


The ABSS is a crucial component of the NEP 2020 strategy. By helping to improve teacher quality and to encourage better teaching practices, it will help to ensure that all children receive a good education.


Overview of the NEP 2020


The National Education Policy, 2020 (NEP 2020) was launched by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi on 14th August, 2018. The main objectives of the NEP 2020 are to provide quality education and enrollment opportunities for all and to promote lifelong learning.


The NEP 2020 aims to create a Skills India 2025 by 2025 and proposes a series of interventions in the field of education, skills and vocational training. The key focus areas of the NEP 2020 are:


1) Quality Education: The objective is to provide quality education that will equip students with the skills they need for an effective future. This includes shifting emphasis from rote learning to creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.


2) Enrollment Opportunities: The policy envisages increasing access to quality education by creating more opportunities for students from all sections of society. This will be done through initiatives such as providing scholarships and financial assistance, improving teacher training programmes, and increasing infrastructure facilities such as schools and colleges.


3) lifelong Learning: The policy envisages making lifelong learning a norm in India by 2030. It proposes initiatives such as creating dedicated infrastructure facilities for adult education, developing new modes of professional learning such as blended learning,


Role of Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam in executing NEP 2020


The National Education Policy, 2020 (NEP 2020), envisages a “Universal Basic Education” (UBE) system which will cover all children in the country between the ages of 6 and 14 years. The aim of UBE is to provide a quality education that will equip children with the essential skills and knowledge to allow them to participate fully in society and contribute to its growth.


Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam (ABHS), an apex body for education, has been mandated by the NEP 2020 to work in partnership with various other agencies and institutions to develop and implement UBE . The ABHS will also play a key role in monitoring and evaluating the progress of UBE .


To achieve these objectives, ABHS has launched the Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam – UBE Task Force. The Task Force comprises of representatives from various ministries/departments involved in implementing NEP 2020, including the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MOSJE), the Department of School Education and Literacy (DESL), the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports (DYAS), as well


Steps taken by Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam to implement NEP 2020


The National Education Policy, 2020, has mandated that all schools must implement the New Education Paradigm (NEP) by 2020. The Akhil Bharatiya Shiksha Samagam (ABSS), a national body representing teachers’ unions, has welcomed the policy and taken steps to implement it in schools nationwide.


ABSS president Randeep Surjewala said that the organisation will work with the government to develop a comprehensive curriculum for NEP-compliant teaching. He added that ABSS will also create teacher training programmes and support school authorities in implementing NEP.


The policy emphasises the need for students to learn through meaningful engagement with content, which is reflected in the designation of ‘learning experiences’ as one of the four core components of NEP. ABSS has also proposed that all schools should have at least one learning experience per day.


The government has set a target of increasing enrolment rates to 75% by 2019 and to 80% by 2025. The objectives of the NEP are to improve school quality, increase student achievement, and reduce gender disparities in education.
