Scheme for Higher Education Youth in Apprenticeship and Skills, The Central Government has launched the Higher Education in Apprenticeship and Skills for Youth (SHREYAS) scheme for the youth. Under this Shreyas scheme, the government is going to provide industry apprenticeship opportunities to the youth and enable them to get gainful employment and contribute to the progress of the country. These opportunities will be applicable to those general graduates who have decided to exit through National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) in April 2022.

Scheme for Higher Education Youth in Apprenticeship and Skills

The main objective of Shreyas Yojana is to increase employability of Indian youth by providing them job work exposure and stipend earning. This degree is a major effort to make the students more efficient, competent, employable and in tune with the needs of the economy.

The program is primarily intended for students in degree courses that are predominantly non-technical, in order to introduce employable skills into their learning, promoting apprenticeship as an integral part of education. In addition, the government's efforts to facilitate employment to be integrated into the education system to provide jobs to candidates after graduation.

Shreyas scheme launched by the central government

The SHREYAS program comprises initiatives of 3 Ministries namely Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Ministry of Labor and Employment, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. This will be done through National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS), National Career Service (NCS) and introduction of BA/BSc/BCom (Vocational) courses in higher educational institutions.

Shreyas Portal

Shreyas Portal will enable educational institutions and industries to login and provide their respective demand and supply of apprenticeship. 

The students matching with the apprenticeship is going to be done as per the eligibility criteria. 

The main focus is that all general degree students who pass out in April 2021 will get the opportunity of apprenticeship in industry and service sector.

In addition, SSC has identified over 100 NSQF aligned job roles and courses in IT / Retail / Logistics / Tourism / Health Care / BFSI / Electronics / Media / Life Sciences and Management under the exiting graduate apprenticeship program can take. 

All these courses will be available from April-May 2021. 

About 40 higher educational institutions have already been linked to take embedded apprenticeship courses. 

MHRD and MSD&E have also started 7 degree apprenticeship courses which include BBA and BVOC courses. 

There are 6 Sector Skill Councils of IT, Retail, Logistics, Tourism, BFSI, Food Processing which have taken the lead.

Objectives of Shreyas Scheme

Improving employability of students with the introduction of employability in the learning process of the higher education system.

To create a functional linkage between academia and industry/service sectors on an ongoing basis.

To impart skills to the high demand students in a dynamic manner.

To establish an earnings while learning system in higher education.

To assist the business/industry to secure good quality manpower.

Connecting the student community with the employment generation efforts of the Central Government.
Shreyas scheme is going to be operated along with National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) to ensure placement of apprentices up to 10% of the total workforce in each trade. 

The Sector Skill Council (SSC) will implement the Shreyas scheme. 

The scheme will cover Baking Finance Insurance Services (BFSI), Retail, Health Care, Telecom, Logistics, Media, Management Services, ITeS and Apparel sectors.

SHREYAS Scheme Implementation – Track 3
Shreyas program is going to witness simultaneous implementation with 3 tracks:-

1st Track – Add-on Apprenticeship (Degree Apprenticeship)

2nd Track – Embedded Apprenticeship

Track 3 - Linking National Career Service to Colleges

SSC has already identified more than 100 sectors where apprenticeship opportunities are to be provided. SSC with the help of its placement cell will identify industries with the respective colleges where students will get apprenticeship opportunities.
