The Union Home Ministry has nominated four persons, including playback singer P.T. Usha and former Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Ram Vilas Paswan, to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka. PT Usha has been nominated from Mysuru district and Ram Vilas Paswan from Mandya district. The other two nominees are Ramesh Jigajinagi, a Rajya Sabha member from Uttara Kannada district and Naresh Agarwal, a Rajya Sabha member from Amritsar district.

Four music icons — PT Usha, Ilaiyaraaja, A R Rahman and Lata Mangeshkar — have been nominated by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to the Rajya Sabha. The nominations were made on Monday by party president Amit Shah during a meeting of the BJP parliamentary board.


The four nominees hail from different parts of India and have contributed immensely to Indian music over the years. PT Usha, who is best known for her work in Telugu cinema, has won several awards including two National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards. Ilaiyaraaja, who is popular for his Tamil songs, has won 72 awards including three Maha Virams. Rahman, who is known for his Hindi songs, has won 49 awards including two Filmfare Awards. Lata Mangeshkar, who is considered India's first female playback singer, has won 16 awards including two National Film Awards and fourIFTA Awards.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday announced that PTT Usha and Ilaiyaraaja were nominated to the Rajya Sabha from the state. The other two nominees are Telugu Desam Party president K Chandrasekhar Rao and former Union minister Jairam Ramesh.

PT Usha has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the Congress. She is a former union minister and Madras state legislative assembly speaker. Ilaiyaraaja has been nominated by the AIADMK. He is an acclaimed music composer and singer. Karthikeyan Kudalur Krishnan, a DMK MP, has also been nominated by the party. The fourth nominee is Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP D Raja.
