With the launch of Internet exchanges in Durgapur and Bardhaman, National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) has made it easy for people to access the internet from anywhere in the country. This not only makes it easier for users, but also allows ISPs and other service providers to offer better services to their customers.

An internet exchange (IX) is a network of computers that allows the smooth and secure exchange of email, chat, web traffic and other types of data between different networks. IXs are used by large companies, universities, and government agencies to connect with other networks. National Internet Exchange of India (NIEX) has launched two IXs in Durgapur and Bardhaman districts of West Bengal. NIEX IX at Durgapur was inaugurated by Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad on October 5th, 2016. The IX at Bardhaman was inaugurated by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on September 19th, 2017.


The IXs will provide high-speed connectivity to small businesses and startups in the districts. The IXs will also help in expanding the reach of internet services in these areas. The IXs will help in increasing the economic opportunities for the locals as well as promote digital literacy.


National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) has launched two internet exchanges in Durgapur and Bardhaman districts of West Bengal.


NIXI is a not-for-profit organisation founded in 2006 with the aim of promoting the growth of the Internet and facilitating the development of an open and accessible global information infrastructure. NIXI operates two internet exchanges – one in Mumbai, India and the other in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, both of which are among the largest in Asia. NIXI has invested over Rs. 100 crore in infrastructure to date.


Durgapur-based Srikrishna Net Exchange (SNE) will offer a range of services including access to content, voice, video and applications. The exchange will be operated on a membership basis with fees for users reflecting the amount of traffic they generate. SNE is expected to be operational by July this year.


Bardhaman-based Jaya Bharati Net Exchange (JBNE) will offer similar services as SNE but with a focus on business users. JBNE is expected to be operational by October this year.

National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) Chairman RS Sharma said that the exchanges would help bridge the digital divide, boost economic development and promote innovation. The Durgapur-based exchange, NIXI2, is operational and the Bardhaman-based exchange, NIXB, will be launched soon.

The Durgapur-based exchange has been operational since November 2016 and the Bardhaman-based exchange will be launched soon.
