IISc Centre for Brain Research officially opened by PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the IISc Centre for Brain Research, one of the world's largest multi-disciplinary research centres in the field of brain sciences. The centre is spread over an area of over 350 acres in Bengaluru and will house over 1,000 scientists from different institutions.

The IISc Centre for Brain Research, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, is the largest research hub in India dedicated to understanding the function and dysfunction of the brain. The centre has an annual budget of Rs 2,000 crore.
The brain is the highest energy user in the body and consumes about 20% of a person's daily caloric intake. It is estimated that by 2025, the global market for cognitive health products will be worth $200 billion.
"With this centre, we are positioning ourselves as a global leader in brain research," says Prof V Srinivasan, Director of IISc Centre for Brain Research and Chairman of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). "This is also a major step forward in nurturing young talent and creating a visionary scientific base."

The Centre, spread over an area of 33 acres near the village of Mahalingam in Thanjavur district, has a state-of-the-art infrastructure that includes a library, conference hall, and laboratories.

Speaking on the occasion, PM Modi said: “The opening of this world-class centre will augment our efforts to better understand brain functioning and lay the foundation for advances in cognitive sciences and neuroscience.”
The Centre was inaugurated by Dr P Ranganathan, Union Minister for Human Resource Development, who said: “This world-class centre will play an important role in promoting research into brain disorders and promoting development of new treatments.”
The Centre has been funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
